Now, he's taken one of his most popular numbers, "Soccer Practice"-featured in his past shows and on his own Dirty Gay Hits CD-and put together a fun and slick video that's a towel-snapping locker room fleshfest. "The Gay Pimp comes out of the steam in the show to turn the cute little Abercrombie boy [played by hottie Rick Schubert] magically gay and drag him through the gay pimp universe," says McGovern, over coffee at his favorite East Village coffeehouse. "It presents the Gay Pimp as this sort of slightly subversive pop superstar who's magical and has gay powers." And yes, the video is a hoot. "There are influences in there from Devo to the YMCA number from Can't Stop the Music. We created a semi-cartoon, sexy universe-kind of like the Abercrombie catalog gone bad." Truly, the video-which will have its premiere at a party at xl on Thursday, December 5th-sends up all that is fun about McGovern's work. There are boys leering in the locker room, 'N SYNC-flavored dance numbers, drag queen cheerleaders (played expertly by Skyy Aviance and Koko), and a frat house that turns into a disco-ballin' shirtless twinkie dance party. The look is money, and McGovern credits that to his crack production team which includes Broadway producer and director Richard-Jay Alexander and the clip's director, Peter Martinez. "I saw Peter's videos for Kevin Aviance and I thought they were magical," says McGovern. His video for 'Rhythm Is My Bitch' is amazing. Peter took everything that I loved about seeing Kevin at Roxy-that whole feeling‹and put it on video. And with 'Soccer Practice' we've created something that puts the whole Gay Pimp concept out there in three minutes and sums it up. And the 'Soccer Practice' thing has a universal theme. It tweaks the titties of straight folks too, by taking everything that they claim as manly and masculine and flipping the script and turning it all really gay." The video is getting released at gay bars and clubs all over the U.S. simultaneously, too. "Hopefully, people out there will be going 'What the hell is that?' And they'll want to know and create a demand," says McGovern. Also likely to be in demand‹McGovern's new clothing line. This week The Starting Line on Chelsea's 8th Avenue will begin stocking his "Dirty Stuff" line of very cool T-shirts boasting sporty logos for "Gay Pimp Varsity Wrestling" and "Dirty Gay Soccer Team" that look like they could have been your old high school gear. That's the point, of course. "The whole Gay Pimp concept actually started out as an idea for a T-shirt, and this just grew from that vibe. I love wearing old high school jerseys, and that sports gear thing is such a breeding ground for your inner dirty gay life. And I wanted to make the T-shirts as authentic as possible, so I went to a company-somewhere in the Midwest-where high schools order their gear. I thought they'd have a problem with it, cause they were like 'Name of team?' and I'm like, 'Dirty Gay.' And it was no problem-they just typed it in the computer!"
