Good Dirty Fun

McGovern sees all of this-the shows, the music, the clothing line-as a way to further his own career, naturally, but also as a way of putting another version of what "gay" means out there. "I want to give a voice to gay life in all its aspects and move it beyond a niche market, and take my certain sensibility and sense of humor to a more widespread audience. There's not anyone in pop culture who's gay and kind of masculine and not shying away from sex, and who kind of owns it in a powerful way. That's my goal-to become that person."

And then there are the parties. Over the past year, the scandalously sexy gay parties that McGovern has hosted with his colleague Dean Johnson-from XXX at The Hole, to Magnum at The Park to John Street downtown-have snagged lots of press and notoriety, both for their brazen full-on boy-sex antics going on, and for closing down as soon as word gets out. The attention has been, well, a bit much. "I like to create a party where I can have fun at, but when New York magazine writes it up, it∂'s just a pain in the ass," McGovern admits. "The tension around that starts to overshadow everything else I want to do. I spent the last two years working my ass off doing shows all over the place, and then one dirty party with dicks on the bar gets all the attention. But lately, I've just decided to embrace it all. I'm doing parties [The Rambles at The Park, and a sleazy-ish downtown Tuesday-night he doesn't want to give away], we've got the video, and the clothing line and I've got a Caroline∂s show coming in January-I'm just trying to work a gay P. Diddy vibe and do it all."

And as P. Diddy has helped take rap and hip-hop to the masses, McGovern and his Gay Pimp (and his accompanying back-up go-go boys) aim to do the same with his "dirty gay" agenda-while having a good time along the way. "My stuff should make you laugh, it should make you feel a little horny and it should get your ass shakin,'" he says. "It's about fun, sexiness and feeling empowered. And about giving some gay teen kid the idea that gayness is cool, and that's it's not scary but that it's awesome. Because it is!
